Samsung has once again pushed the boundaries of foldable technology with its latest release, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. Launching October 25 in South Korea, this premium device introduces several notable improvements over its predecessor while maintaining the iconic fold design that has defined the series.
Design and Build
The most immediately noticeable change comes in the form factor. At just 236 grams and 10.6mm thick, this new model sheds 1.5mm and 3 grams compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, making it the most svelte iteration in the series to date. The device showcases a distinctive striped pattern on its back panel, utilizing premium materials including what appears to be Samsung's signature Armor Aluminum finish. The camera housing has also received a subtle redesign, sporting a more rectangular profile compared to the previous oval arrangement.
Display Innovation
The Special Edition boasts the widest screens in the Galaxy Z Fold lineup. The main display unfolds to reveal an impressive 8-inch canvas with a 20:18 ratio, while the cover screen measures 6.5 inches with a 21:9 ratio. Both displays represent an increase in size compared to the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6, offering users more screen real estate for productivity and entertainment.
Camera and Performance
A standout upgrade comes in the form of the new 200MP main camera, a significant jump from the 50MP sensor found in the regular Galaxy Z Fold 6. While other camera sensors remain unchanged, this primary camera upgrade promises to deliver more detailed and vivid imagery.
Performance receives a boost with:
- 16GB RAM (up from 12GB in the standard model)
- Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor
- 512GB storage (available in single configuration)
- Wi-Fi 7 support (upgraded from Wi-Fi 6e)
Battery and Software
The device maintains the same battery specifications as its predecessor:
- Rated capacity: 4,272mAh
- Typical capacity: 4,400mAh
On the software front, the Special Edition launches with Android 14-based One UI 6.1.1 and is promised seven years of updates, extending support until 2031. Users can expect eligibility for the upcoming One UI 7 beta later this year.
Notable Omissions
Despite earlier rumors, the Special Edition does not include S Pen support, as confirmed by Samsung's product page. This may disappoint users hoping for stylus functionality in this premium variant.
